California Speed

California Speed might sound like the new trendy drug of choice for Hollywood's swanky celebs, but it's merely Midway's translation of the arcade racing game from Atari Games. Still, "drug" might not be a too-far-off description for this game: Although it gets you juiced up with psychedelic, tripped-out track designs, its shallow gameplay and dated graphics quickly bring you back down to a catatonic stupor. Those of you addicted to simple arcade racers may still feel a "rush," but for the rest, this game's a bad trip.

Golden Eye 007

GoldenEye 007 has been a huge success for Rareware, and it's easy to see why. More than a simple movie translation, this has earned its top-seller status on its own. Fans of Doom and Quake will recognize the first-person shooter perspective, but there the similarity ends. James Bond 007 has too much style to simply blast everything in sight and move to the next level. No, as 007, the player has a variety of different missions to perform, each with its own specific objectives. Each mission follows the film closely, and so James must use stealth and cunning as much as brute force. But if you see a Kalashnikov rifle lying around, by all means pick it up.

Paper Mario

Nintendo 64 owners have been patiently waiting for a decent role-playing game, and, at long last, one has arrived in the form of the perplexing Paper Mario. World-famous video game icon Mario stars in this unconventional RPG, which was originally announced as Super Mario RPG 2. Don't be fooled by the cutesy visual exterior of this game, which borrows heavily from the well-established Mario universe. Yep... it's the same lovable Mario who dons his familiar red overalls and unkempt moustache. However, the catch is that Mario now stubbornly appears as a two-dimensional character--despite the largely 3-D exterior gaming environments that surround him. When our flat-headed friend turns around, his paper-thin presence becomes immediately apparent. It's a cool gimmick, but fortunately Paper Mario is far from a cut-and-paste cartoon caper.

Conker's Bad Fur Day

Conker's Bad Fur Day is for adults, the ESRB has rated this game Mature; it should not be bought for--or played by or around--children. That stated, the story of the game is the following: Conker's very good night turns into a very bad day. He has to deal with a crazy and abusive world, all while suffering through a massive hangover. Conker encounters abusive paint pots; jabbering dung beetles; trigger-happy, scar-faced Tediz; and a belligerent giant, with only a frying pan as a means of self-defense. He is resourceful, however, and makes the best of his situation. The game combines elements of 3-D exploration, combat, and puzzle solving. It features cinematic cutscenes, movie parodies, facial expressions, dozens of unhinged characters, and 1- to 4-player deathmatch games in a variety of styles.

Dr. Mario 64

Back in the early 1990s, after the world had gone mad for Tetris, Nintendo put out its own variant of the puzzle game that, unlike most clones of the day, actually brought some new life to the original idea. Now the classic Nintendo game, with some improvements of its own, is reintroduced for the Nintendo 64. Rather than just twisting shapes to fill vacant spaces, Dr. Mario 64 will have you matching capsule-shaped pills to fight like-colored viruses. Players earn point bonuses when stringing combos together. Dr. Mario 64 comes with the original one- and two-player modes, and introduces a simultaneous four-player mode.

Donkey Kong 64

Every so often a game enters the scene propelled by so much hype and promising so many innovations that decorating it with more pretty words seems pointless. Donkey Kong 64 falls into this category. Donkey Kong 64 is a 3-D action adventure game--ŕ la Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie--based on the game icon of the same name (you know, the ape who rolled barrels down on Mario's head in the early '80s arcades). In this massive and graphically beautiful game, Donkey Kong and his pals must right the wrongs of King K. Rool by exploring their home island in search of more than 200 gold bananas, as well as other items that help the primates' progress.

Hey You, Pikachu!

Video games don't get much cuter than Hey You, Pikachu!, a Pokémon title that allows players to talk to their favorite electric mouse--via the Voice Recognition Unit (VRU) that's included--and share in its day-to-day adventures. While older Pokémon fans might find the game too childish, the candy-coated goodness that's found here makes it perfect for the kiddies.

The World Is Not Enough

Considering the success Rare's GoldenEye 007 has had on the Nintendo 64, Electronic Arts designers had their work cut out for them in making another 3-D shooter using the James Bond license. The World Is Not Enough is a smashing success in terms of its graphics and sound, as well as in how it weaves the movie's plot into the gameplay. Unfortunately, this Bond game has just enough flaws to keep it from achieving classic status.

Banjo and Kazooie, that bear and bird platforming pair from their beloved, eponymous game, are back in Banjo-Tooie. Their second adventure will take them through eight new worlds, full of hulking bosses, minigames, and the series' trademark goofy gameplay. There are plenty of new moves to learn, but this time Banjo and Kazooie can work some missions independently, utilizing special skills. Banjo-Tooie features a multiplayer element to some of the minigames, in some cases supporting four players!

Perfect Dark

A first-person shooter that mixes spy and sci-fi, Perfect Dark is both a thoroughly engrossing one-player experience and a riotously fun multiplayer romp. Easily one of the best games of its genre on any video game console, this long-awaited follow-up to GoldenEye 007 is a must-have for Nintendo 64 owners--and a damn good reason to be one if you're not.

Toy Story 2

Buzz Lightyear and the gang are back in this fast-action family game, which is inspired by the Disney/Pixar feature film Toy Story 2. Your mission is to keep Woody the Cowboy from falling into the hands of a toy collector. Film favorites Hamm the pig, Rex the dinosaur, and Slinky the dog are back to help you save your friend in this 3-D-based action game.

A 3-D action-adventure game starring everyone's favorite webhead, Spider-Man is quite a rarity--a superhero video game that doesn't suck. Featuring an original story jam-packed with characters and locations from the comics, and, more importantly, gameplay that does our hero justice, this is one title that won't disappoint Spidey fans.

Ridge Racer 64

If you're looking for the ultimate in road-racing realism, you've definitely clicked on the wrong title. But for pedal-to-the-metal arcade racing, Ridge Racer 64 brings home the checkered flag. Most of the racetracks are direct ports (with new scenery added) from the older Ridge Racer games for the PlayStation, but if you're new to the series, the Nintendo 64 version offers a great introduction to the classic racing franchise.

Jeremy McGrath Supercross 2000

The game has all the right elements: Jeremy is the 11-time world Supercross champion, and the soundtrack is from the punk band the Offspring, but somehow the game just fails in the execution. The game lacks that certain style, that excitement, and instead flounders somewhere between a racing and freestyle-stunt simulator.
